are following breaking news out of downtown oakland. police are investigating a fatal shooting. christien kafton is live for us. >> reporter: let me tell you this is a large crime scene. it's spread out over five blocks here in downtown oakland. right now alameda county coroners office is on scene here just about to load the victim into a van to remove him from this scene. there was a very expensive sports car just about seven or eight minutes ago that expensive sports car was towed out of the area. we have video of what the scene looked like earlier. police say they responded to the scene around 3:00 this morning and found the dead man in the street with numerous shell casings around him. and there is another scene just about a block away with more shell casings there and a half block away again that very expensive sports car. it looked like ans aton martin vintage. that sports car is certainly part of this investigation. we saw investigators looking over it with flashlight and trying to get a little bit more information about that. as mike said a couple moments ago, this shooting happened when

'chez panisse'... is the site of this restaurant fire. >> it is still not known but the damage seems to be significant. there were not even sure if it was of the inside with the outside but they just responded at 3:00 a.m. let me show you video of one this actually was active. when they showed up the officials knew that it was a landmark restaurant. they have quickly figured it out that it was more of an exterior fire and an interior fire and were able to put it out. they just want to make sure that there is no further damage inside the building. so they are trying to tear down the branches because there is a large tree in front of the restaurant. making sure the there are no pockets of flames or smoldering inside. it seems to be pretty significant damage. they are saying that this is a out of commission. but the good news is that this is salvageable. there were sp

580 in oakland are once again open after a man was hit and killed on the freeway overnight. chp says the man was hit by a car on eastbound 580 near duten avenue in oakland just before 12:30 this morning. the three right lanes were blocked for hours while investigators were on the scene trying to figure out how the man ended up on the freeway. investigators say he may have been trying to run across lanes or perhaps may have fallen from a nearby overpass. >>> new this morning on -- new detail on a deadly murder suicide at quantico training base in virginia earlier this week. two of the marines who were killed including the alleged gunman were from the bay area. the suspected gunman, 25-year-old sergeant lopez is from pacifica. a highly decorated marine who served in iraq and afghanistan before becoming a trainer at quantico. the female victim is 19-year-old lance corporal sarah castermata. she is from oakley and was promoted to lance corporal just last month. sergeant lopez also killed corporal jacob woolly in mississippi. nbc news has learned the three were involved in a long triangle

, california, oakland and san francisco. oakland and san francisco collected hundreds of guns. they paid hundreds of dollars for each one of them. in brooklyn new york, in december, the police department and district attorney's office co-sponsored a gun buyback. again they got hundreds of guns off the street. baltimore, maryland, police officers traded grocery store gift cards for guns. and in los angeles, the city's gang-reduction unit sponsored a gun buyback program that brought in 2,000 weapons. orange county, new york. the sheriff's office there ran a buyback program that ran for three months state, $150 for any gun turned in, ran for three months straight. that's the haul they got. fremont, new jersey, a gun buyback. at the city's fire training facility. paying more than $150,000 in exchange of rifles and assault rifles. santa clara county, california, has had two gun buyback programs just this month. the county provided the money to exchange for the guns. last weekend, atlantic city, new jersey, their guns for cash buyback in atlantic was the second most successful in state history

back. prices are rising the most in places like phoenix, las vegas, oakland. prices are rising and 90 of the 100 largest metros. so across the country people seem prices increased. gerri: the best and more than six years. we have been waiting a long time for this. i want you to talk a little bit about it because you made some interesting comments about phoenix, vegas, and detroit saying that their gains are not sustainable. what do you mean? >> in some markets, like those you mentioned, we have seen big price increases, but without strong job growth and with their risk of some foreclosure still to come. in other markets like san francisco, seattle, denver, we are seeing big price increases along side strong job growth and tight safety race. in other words, and those markets -- gerri: with housing and job growth going hand-in-hand, job growth is what fuels new housing purchases. that is very good news. i want to talk for a second about sustainability of the trend because, let's face it, housing inventories are in the toilet. there was a 17% drop in housing inventories year-over-year. t
